Group fitness classes are not only popular because they’re fun; they’re also super effective. They get you into the routine of working out and are also great for socializing. Whether you’re heading to your first kickboxing, yoga-fusion, or weight lifting class, we suggest getting ready with the following steps:

Step 1: Picking your class

What are you in the mood for? A little cardio to get your heart racing? Some strength training to get you in shape for tank top season? When it comes to picking a class, don’t worry too much about fitness level because almost every move can be adapted. Not sure what interests you? Research the type of class before you go. You can usually find articles and YouTube videos explaining what the class entails so you’ll know what you’re signing up for.

Step 2: Pack your gym bag

Perks of a group fitness class? You’ll have everything you need at your fingertips. Many other gym classes require you to haul in your own equipment, but the only thing you really need at Boost Fitness is yourself and a water bottle. All of our gyms have top-of-the-line equipment that will help you get the perfect workout. Many of our locations even have yoga mats, so don’t worry about bringing your own. Some of our favorite items to pack in your gym bag include extra hair ties, a small towel (you’ll be drenched after a cardio class), and flip flops for the shower. Save time in the morning by packing your gym bag the night before and storing it in your car.

Step 3: Have a pre-workout snack

While some people can breeze through a workout on an empty stomach, we recommend packing a little snack to power through your workout. If you’re coming to class straight after work, keep a snack in your gym bag to hold you over until dinner. Need a little snack-spiration? Check out some of our favorite sweet and salty snacks.

Step 4: Arrive early

Group fitness instructors teach because they’re passionate about helping others. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Everyone starts off as a beginner. And while you may have gotten away with sitting in the back of class at school when you didn’t know what was going, that’s not going to fly in a group fitness class. Trust us, no one is going to judge you if you miss a rep or do push ups on your knees. However, it’s very important you know what’s going on so you don’t get hurt. Many group fitness classes involve props, so you want to make sure you know how to use everything before you get started.

Too shy to speak up? We recommend arriving to class early and observing what everyone else is doing. What equipment are they grabbing? Are people stretching or just chatting before class begins? Pro tip: don’t hide in the back. It will be more difficult to spot what’s going on. Instead, sneak into the middle. That way, if the class changes direction later on, all eyes aren’t on you. It’s easy to spot people who always go to class, so make sure you keep a close eye on them during class and don’t be afraid to chat them up. The beauty of group fitness is the helpful sense of community in each class.

Don’t forget to grab your ticket!

Before you walk into the group exercise room, make sure that you have a class ticket in your hand! These tickets are super helpful when it comes to making sure there is enough equipment for all participants. It also helps us to gauge the popularity of a class and determine what additional classes to add to our lineup.
