1. You Can Eat More!
The more lean muscle you have, the more calories you’ll burn, including when you’re at rest. In fact, a pound of muscle burns three times as many calories as a pound of fat.
2. You Can Be More Cheerful!
The Duke University Medical Center found that a brisk 30-minute walk or jog around a track three times a week was just as effective as antidepressant medication in relieving the symptoms of major depression in middle-aged and elderly people.
4. You Can Burn Fat!
During the first 15 minutes of your workout, your body burns carbs and sugars. After thirty minutes, your body begins burning fat.
5. Fanciness is Not Required!
You’ll burn a similar amount of calories walking a mile as you would running it, so do what you can and go at your pace. (You’ll burn approximately 80 calories walking a mile versus 97 calories running it).
6. A little bit goes a long way.
It only takes 100 too many calories in a day to gain 10 pounds in a year. Conversely, walking one mile a day burns 100 calories. You could lose 10 pounds in a year without changing your eating habits.
7. You’ll Be Less Stressed!
The Mayo Clinic has evidence that exercise has a positively effect on mood-enhancing neurotransmitters in the brain, can release muscle tension, and can reduce levels of the stress hormone cortisol.
8. Your Heart Will Heart You!
A recent Harvard study shows that walking at a moderate pace (3mph) for up to 3 hours a week — or 30 minutes a day — can cut the risk of heart disease in women by as much as 40%.
Also, unsurprisingly, being overweight creates a lot more work for your heart. In fact, being just 25 lbs. overweight means you have nearly 5,000 extra miles of blood vessels through which your heart must pump blood.
9. You’ll Be a Calorie Incinerator!
You burn more calories with muscle than you do with fat – even at rest!For every one pound of muscle you gain, your body burns an extra 40 calories/day. Build that muscle!
